Description

This course will delve into the origins, history and evolution of Roma Jazz, allowing students to gain a deep understanding of its cultural significance and musical modes. Lache and Don, esteemed Roma Jazz musicians, will guide students through various aspects of this genre, sharing their expertise, techniques and personal insights.

The curriculum will cover a wide range of topics, including:

1. Introduction to Roma Jazz: Understanding the roots, influences, and development of this unique musical style.

2. Roma Jazz Instruments: An overview of the instruments commonly used in Roma Jazz and their distinctive characteristics.

3. Rhythm and Groove: Exploring the rhythmic patterns, syncopation and improvisational techniques that define Roma Jazz.

4. Melodic Structures and Phrasing: Learning about the melodic structures, scales and phrasing techniques specific to Roma Jazz.

5. Harmony and Chord Progressions: Understanding the harmonic language and chord progressions commonly employed in Roma Jazz compositions.

6. Improvisation: Developing improvisational skills through practical exercises, jam sessions and analysis of iconic Roma Jazz solos.

7. Roma Jazz Repertoire: Exploring the repertoire of influential Roma Jazz musicians, analyzing their compositions and understanding their artistic choices.

8. Performance Practice: Studying the performance practices, stage presence and communication within a Roma Jazz ensemble.

The course delivery will combine theoretical lectures, practical demonstrations, hands-on workshops and interactive discussions. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions, receive individualized feedback and engage in collaborative projects. Additionally, guest speakers and performers from the Roma Jazz community may be invited to share their perspectives and experiences. To give short-term arts students ample time to determine if a short-term program is right for them, students can attend 3 classes before a commitment is required. If you withdraw during this period, you will be charged only for each class you attend without being charged the City of Burnaby refund fee of 10%. Withdrawals/refunds are not permitted after the start of the 3rd class of a short-term program.
