About

The Chamber Music Academy program, led by the Garneau String Quartet, gives students the opportunity to work with Robert Uchida, Laura Veeze, Keith Hamm, and Julie Hereish.

All experienced chamber musicians and orchestral leaders, the faculty looks forward to sharing their passion for ensemble playing. The young artists will experience the joy and fun of playing with others in a small group, while becoming familiar with some of the best music ever written.

Participants

This high-level chamber music program is for intermediate and advanced string and piano students. It is great for junior high, high school, and post-secondary students.

Ages: 12 to 25.

Requirement: Minimum Level 6 RCM

Sessions

There are 12 sessions, 2 hours per week. Session includes one hour of coaching and one hour of rehearsal.

The young artists will receive coaching from all members of the quartet, have the opportunity to work with guest artists, participate in performance classes, and have end-of-term performance opportunities.

If enrollment is high, we may need to adjust the times to accommodate additional chamber music groups. We will ask for your input before any time-changes are made.

Learning

  • Understand the basics to chamber music score study.
  • Better understand the approach to chamber music. What does it mean to be a chamber musician?
  • Make use of rehearsal techniques and learn how to rehearse effectively. How do we rehearse intonation, togetherness, balance, and come to a unified interpretation of a work?
  • Record and workshop our performances.
  • Work and think critically about the repertoire being prepared.
  • Perform selected chamber music works with peers in the Chamber Music Academy program.

Parking

  • Participants will receive a parking discount code for the Alberta College Campus lot closer to the start date of the program along with a welcome package.
  • Read parking instructions: https://musce.ca/3fHxmBQ
  • Use HONKMOBILE to pay online or download the app.

How has chamber music shaped your career?
"I grew up in a family of musicians. So, I played lots of chamber music from the time I was little and it was what inspired me most to keep playing, keep developing and in the end pursue music as a career." - Laura Veeze
What are you most excited to teach?
"I’m excited to explore with the students ways of becoming great listeners, conversationalists and story tellers through chamber music playing: How to listen to the different voices and their changing roles, how to interpret the music in the context of the time it was written, how to let the music speak its story." - Julie Hereish "I love sharing meaningful ways to communicate great music with audiences. Sharing great works of art colleagues and listeners is such an exciting challenge and offers endless learning opportunities at every level of development." - Keith Hamm
What can students expect to learn?
"I think our students can expect to have a lot of fun, learn a lot about music, and how to function in a group. They are going to study and perform some incredible music in a positive and enriching environment. Our students will have wonderful opportunities to perform, work with guest clinicians, and most importantly, have the opportunity to learn for each other." - Robert Uchida
