Description

Resting Stroke: Elementary Backstroke and Sidestroke

Elementary Backstroke Skill Step:

  • Body position and breathing (glide/recovery)
    1. On the back, body straight, arm against sides, palm toward thighs.
    2. Head back and in line with the body.
    3. Legs straight, together, toes pointed.
  • Arm Action
    1. Bring the hands toward each other.
    2. When hands are mid-chest, turn the thumb down on the arm closest to the feet.
    3. Push the arms back to the recovery position.
  • Leg action (whip kick)
    1. Feet drop down, knees at surface.
    2. Ankles flex, toes turn out.
    3. Push up and around.
    4. Legs together, toes pointed.
  • Coordination and Timing
    1. Slide up - feet drop, arms out - toes out, arms pull - feet around.
    2. Glide until momentum starts to slow.
    3. Inhale at recovery, exhale at kick/pull.


Sidestroke Skill Set:

  • Body and breathing position (glide/recovery)
    1. Body on side, arm extended, ear near shoulder.
    2. Head turned slightly - mouth out of the water.
    3. Top arm resting on the thigh.
    4. Legs straight, together, toes pointed.
  • Arm Action
    1. Bring the hands toward each other.
    2. When the hands are mid-chest, turn the thumb down on the arm closest to the feet.
    3. Push the arms back to the recovery position.
  • Leg action (scissor kick)
    1. Bend and slightly separate the knees.
    2. Slowly extend top leg forward, bottom leg backward to open the legs wide.
    3. Pull both legs together to recovery position.
  • Coordination and Timing
    1. Arms to chest - legs extend, arms to recovery - legs kick.
    2. Glide until momentum starts to slow.
    3. Inhale at recovery, exhale at kick/pull.


Safety Benchmark:

  • Put on a lifejacket from in the water, kick on back 10 m/30 ft.


Swim Benchmark:

  • Elementary Backstroke and Sidestroke
    1. 10 m/30 ft each stroke.
    2. May wear flotation.
    3. May breathe anytime.

Stroke School Red (8-35 Minute Lessons)

In Stroke School, students work toward learning stroke techniques and receive colour stage awards (White, Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green) for each achievement. The colour stages are used to divide students into broad ability groups. Learning is self-paced but challenging.
