Description
Prerequisite(s): 17+ years old unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (then 9+ years old).
The first step in our Climbing Skills Series. This "learn the ropes" introductory course covers the technical skills needed to successfully complete the top rope belay test and use the Recreation Climbing Centre unsupervised during open climbing hours. Topics covered include harness use, rope management, and belay techniques, all taught by our certified Association of Canadian Mountain Guides Climbing Gym Instructors. The course fee includes a complimentary Recreation top rope belay test and all equipment rentals.
Participant Outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Properly equip a climbing harness and tie in to a fall protection rope system controlled by a belayer, including safety checks.
- Demonstrate smooth rope control while belaying as their partner climbs, rests, and is lowered.
- Demonstrate effective and efficient communication between climber and belayer.

Program Schedule
This is a single two-hour lesson, regularly scheduled on Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons. Double-check the specific program date and time at the bottom of this page before registering.
To ensure your best experience we recommend you attend this program with:
- Active clothing and footwear (closed-toe shoes) in alignment with our facility access guidelines.
- Climbing harnesses and chalk will be provided, and climbing shoes are available for use if desired.
