Lead Climbing

Prerequisite(s): 17+ years old, must have passed an MRU Top Rope Belay Test, and comfortable top rope climbing 5.9.

This four-hour intermediate course covers the fundamentals of lead climbing and the requisite skills to successfully complete the lead climbing belay test and lead climb in the Climbing Centre during open climbing hours. Topics covered include draw clipping, rope management, and lead belay techniques, all taught by our certified Association of Canadian Mountain Guides Climbing Gym Instructors. The course fee includes a complimentary lead belay test and all equipment rentals.

Participant Outcomes:

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the fall factor present in different lead climbing fall scenarios.
• Demonstrate efficient lead belaying technique, following the standards of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG).
• Demonstrate safe and efficient techniques for clipping the rope into a draw.

Program Schedule

Each four-hour course consists of two two-hour classes, regularly scheduled on back-to-back Wednesday evenings. Participants must be present for both classes to cover all the skills in this program. Double-check the specific program dates and time at the bottom of this page before registering.

To ensure your best experience we recommend you attend this program with:

• Active clothing and footwear (closed-toe shoes) in alignment with our facility access guidelines.
• Climbing harnesses and chalk will be provided, and climbing shoes are available for use if desired.
