• Practical in-studio training day with Instructor (Maria Raitt)
• Supervised written exam (in-person)
• Practical Evaluation (Feb 20 or 21)
*practical evaluations must be completed over the next two days during conference. You will be required to create and lead a 45 minute group fitness class with participants (supplied by UBCO Recreation).
Led by Maria Raitt, this course teaches the practical skills and professional ethics required to be a successful group fitness instructor. Attendees will learn how to program plan for all class sections and fitness levels in a safe and caring atmosphere, as well as proper use of space, group formations and/or choreography skills. Stability ball, step, and free weight exercise ideas/techniques in both high and low impact situations will also be taught. This course will provide ample teaching opportunities throughout the practical day on February 19 and supplemental practicum evaluation within the Hangar Fitness Centre Feb 20 & 21.
Over the last two days of conference, you should book a time for your in-studio practical evaluation with Maria. You will be required to lead a 45-minute group fitness class as part of your final evaluation. You will have 4-5 participants attend your class while Maria completes your evaluation. Students who complete this requirement in the first couple weeks have a better success rate of course completion.
*pre-requisite for this course is Human Anatomy or CFES Fitness Knowledge Course which can be done online through CFES. If you are unsure if your Human Anatomy or other courses would work as your pre-requisite, please contact Maria Raitt at maria.raitt@ubc.ca.
