Description
Nitobe Memorial Garden is a traditional Japanese Stroll Garden and authentic tea house located at the University of British Columbia. The garden celebrates the memory of Dr. Inaz? Nitobe (1862-1933), a remarkable Japanese figure whose goal was “to become a bridge across the Pacific. Dr. Nitobe strove to promote a better understanding of Japanese culture in the West at a time when Japan was inconceivably foreign in the minds of most Westerners. After the tour we will be having lunch at the Milltown Bar and Grill (included) before visiting the historic Joy Kogawa House. The house is one of the few remaining properties in Vancouver that has been traced back to ownership by a Japanese Canadian family and was confiscated by the Canadian government and sold without the owner’s permission. It is also a site of many memories for Joy Kogawa and her family.
