Description
The Kitsilano Community Centre's garden sprouted in June 2014 and is a beautiful permaculture focused green space used for educating and inspiring community through collaborative learning, growing and sharing, and saving seeds. Organized and managed by Village Vancouver and Westside Neighbourhood Food Network, Kits Community Garden is an inclusive and equitable family friendly, cross cultural collaborative community garden.
All levels of gardening experience are welcome. Incorporating both annuals and perennials, the garden, which is part of the Westside Permaculture Corridor, cascades along the south wall of the rink, between the sidewalk along Larch and the parking lot. It includes a shady zone near Larch Street where informal seating invites visitors to linger, seven raised beds on three different levels that produce flowers, herbs, vegetables, and fruit, and three rocky slopes, a native plant focused vertical garden, a small herb spiral, and areas along the rink wall that grow herbs, pollinator-friendly flowers, and fruit-bearing shrubs and trees, all separated by wood chip paths.
As part of ongoing gardening activities, gardeners also learn how to save seeds, some of which are distributed for free through Village Vancouver seed libraries around Vancouver, including the seed library at the community centre. The garden is as much about growing community and individuals as it is about growing plants and building soil. Engage in friendly conversation with community members who have questions about the garden or about becoming part of the group- Make decisions collaboratively when appropriate- Share responsibility for the group's functioning- Assist with garden-related workshops that Village Vancouver and Westside Neighbourhood Food Network offer through the centre- Promote the garden at events- Integrate new gardeners. The collaborative garden can accommodate 15-18 gardeners. If you register after the maximum has been reached for a particular session, you'll be placed on a waiting list. People on the wait list will receive an invitation to volunteer when a space becomes available in the collaborative garden. Please register for this free program. Should you be unable to participate, please call the Community Centre to cancel registration so we can fill the spot with someone from the waitlist.
To participate all year, you need to register for each session during the year. (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall). Part of our 9th Annual Westside Food Festival (May 20-July 7)
