Description
The grassroots HopOn program is designed to help young people master basic cycling skills and build confidence through achievement. Launched by Ontario Cycling, the program is a fun, games-based and inclusive of all riders. Our goal is to provide a safe and inclusive environment for youth to socially interact and develop their on-bike skills with our trained instructors.
All of our instructors of HopOn must complete a series of National Coaches Certification Program (NCCP) training courses as well as the HopOn eLearning module and in-person orientation. As an instructor, it is also required to submit a vulnerable sector background check.
Our 4-week after school program helps students learn basic cycling skills and safety awareness such as:
- Stopping and starting quickly
- Changing gears
- Tapping your head while riding
Our sessions utilize the newly renovated Tennis Courts at the Port Weller Community Centre, and may also use the trails of Malcolmson Eco Park.
Participants must bring the following items:
- Bicycle in working condition (ideally without training wheels)
- CSA approved bike helmet
- Water bottle
Fee assistance is available through the Fee Assistance in Recreation Program.
Equipment assistance may be available through the My First Bicycle Program.
**Parking at the Community Centre may be limited due to Port Weller Soccer League games. Please allow extra time in case you need to park on a side street and walk in. Please obey all posted parking signs.**
