Description
Join the Conservatory Youth Orchestra! This is an intermediate orchestra for students who have been playing their instruments for 2 or more years and are looking for more ensemble learning experiences. This program is open to all players studying typical orchestral winds (clarinet/oboe/flute/piccolo/bassoon), brass (trumpet/tuba/baritone/trombone/french horn), string (cello/violin/viola/double bass/harp), and percussion (timpani/marimba/xylophone and others). This is perfect for Private Lesson students looking for experience playing in a group and elementary band players curious about orchestral music.
Players will spend the first 45 minutes with a clinician in their instrument area, then will join the rest of the Regina Community Orchestra (RCO) members for the first 45 minutes of rehearsal as a large group. Both groups will be learning the same repertoire throughout the term.
The Conservatory Youth Orchestra is open to anyone without audition; however, basic instrumental and musical skills in your instrument of 2 years at minimum is required to join. Students who take this program can gain valuable experience before they audition into the South Saskatchewan Youth Orchestra or they can join the full RCO rehearsals after a couple of years of ensemble experience.
This Conservatory Youth Orchestra and the RCO is directed by Adrian Casas. This program takes new players at anytime of the year with the fee prorated. Please contact our Student & Instructor Services Non-Credit Office to get in touch with our director to ensure it is a good time to join (ex: if we are one week before a performance, we may recommend joining the week after).
If your child is a string player younger than age 12, they can join our Conservatory String Orchestra on Monday nights. If your child is under 12 and has been playing their brass/wind instrument for 2 years or more, please contact our Program Coordinator to inquire about an age exemption.
Learn more about our other group music programs on our website: Group Music.
Note about UR Community: If you do not already have an account our Student & Instructor Services Non-Credit Office will create an account for you or your child and log-in information will be e-mailed prior to the course starting. All weekly course information from instructors should be posted and communicated in this online classroom. While this is not a hybrid program, if participants are ill or out of town, you could join this class via Zoom. Classrooms in UR Community will have a link to a Zoom classroom. Please just notify your instructor at least one business day before your class if you need to join class this way to ensure the instructor can accommodate your request.
Find any health & safety protocols for campus on this website: Term Updates.
This program is supported by the Saskatchewan Band Association and Saskatchewan Orchestral Association in partnership with the RCO. The RCO welcomes seniors, adults and young amateur musicians interested in playing orchestral music in a fun and safe environment.
