The spray park committee is a group of community members who have come together to focus on a revitalization project for the Wetaskiwin recreation grounds, directly west of the Manluk pool. Primary focus is building a spray park on a recirculating system. Wetaskiwin is the only community in Alberta within a population of 6,000 and 20,000 that does not have a spray park. Other areas of focus are an all-inclusive playground, accessible fitness area, benches, picnic shelters, and eventual washroom facilities. Wetaskiwin currently has very limited access to free recreation, particularly accessible recreation. There is not one fully accessible park in all of our city. Building Wetaskiwin's first barrier free playground and recreation area will provide many new opportunities for families and community members of all ages and abilities. This project upon completion will draw in people outside our community, in turn, bringing in a huge economic benefit for businesses in Wetaskiwin. This community-led project will be possible through grants, fundraising, and donations. The projected budget as it stands would be roughly $1.2M for the completed project at the high end. This number, which is the highest aspiration for the project, is based on initial consultation and plans, and can change depending on updated needs and ideas. The scope of the project can easily be scaled back as final numbers come in. The goal is to start building in summer of 2025.
